This could get a little weird 😁
Welcome to the very first article for The Potential We Have.
Why? Why that title? Why a newsletter? And what’s with the logo?
Well firstly, through all the roles I’ve had, the work I perform and the content I produce, there has been a little piece that was missing for me. Something that didn’t really have a place in professional environments, and yet something that wasn’t easily incorporated into social ones either.
That something was the opportunity to hypothesise, challenge and stretch our understanding as human entities. Connecting current fundamental principles and known quantities with the more abstract, less tangible possibilities.
Don’t get me wrong, I get thoroughly energised contributing in the #leadership and #coaching spaces. And the reason behind that is, I have a deeper drive to see us make the most of the opportunity we have as conscious, energy-interacting entities.
And that’s what fascinates me. We have a choice*.
A very deliberate choice to not settle for the functions and behaviours that come naturally through the cause and effect of our genetic make-up and the environments in which we operate. But rather choose a harder road of intentionally expanding our functioning and behaviours so that we create value beyond just our technology and comforts.
Value between each other, value in our experiences, value for our environments, and value for the future and who, or whatever may emerge behind us.
So that’s the ‘why’, and the title, “The Potential We Have” seeks to reflect that perspective. That’s to say, within us, at this point in time and space, we have the potential and opportunity to drive our collective development towards a future that brings value to, and from our existence.
Why a newsletter? Well, there was a LinkedIn promo-ad-box-notification-thingy about the option that I clicked on… and that’s it.
And the logo? I’m actually quite fond of it. Whenever I’ve had quiet times over the years, from childhood until now, and I would start to doodle, it would inevitably depict a horizon and a doorway to something unexplored and unknown.
I guess that’s what this newsletter seeks to achieve; to go beyond that door and find out just what we might do with this rare opportunity to exist today.
What then can you expect for the next few articles? In no particular order some core points will include:
😐 What I mean by ‘conscious, energy-interacting entities’.
⚛ The refreshing fact that there is still a lot to explore considering regular matter (atoms, molecules, air water, you, me, us, the earth stars and galaxies) only makes up about 5% of the universe.
🌟 The somewhat deflating fact that galaxies outside our local group will have travelled well beyond our reach and sight in the distant future.
🔬 A targeted perspective through the lenses of the Fermi Paradox, the Great Filter and the Kardashev scale for civilisation advancement.
📈 Whether we have actually made any functional and behavioural advances over the last 4000 years or more.
❓ And what we could potentially become and the role we could play as ‘advanced’ (in the loosest sense) conscious, energy-interacting entities.
If that all sounds a bit ‘sci-fi’, it is. There are certainly scientific components needed to provide a tangible foundation for this exploration. But the ideas to be floated, the questions to be posed, the perspectives to be viewed and the potential to be extracted will benefit from our fluid imaginations.
Based on the information science is uncovering about the universe and matter, it does appear that we are very lucky to exist at all. Additionally, with the information on us as a species and indeed our brains, it certainly appears we have the choice and the potential to advance our functioning and behaviours to add value. Value beyond just our technological advances.
I’m by no means the only person thinking or exploring in these wavelengths. In fact, there are well established organisations with the resources to produce fantastic contributions in this space. This is just my contribution to ignite ideas, generate conversation and play a part in realising our potential.
“Bring me that horizon.”
*A choice that is at least until neuroscience reveals that no, we (as conscious energy-interacting entities) are literally and in every way just by-products of biological/chemical/electrical processes… But then, even if choice is an illusion, we can still ‘make a choice’ and see what happens. 😛
